Below are the steps on how to manage customers within the Authorize.net Merchant portal. If you need information on how to add and support customers via API Integration, please visit https://developer.authorize.net/api/reference/features/customer-profiles.html
Customer Profiles
You can use customer profiles to enable merchants to tokenize and store sensitive customer payment information on our secure servers, which simplifies PCI DSS compliance as well as the payments process for returning customers and recurring transactions. For Customer Profile API reference information, see the API Reference Guide above.
By providing quick access to stored customer information, Authorize.net Customer Profiles are ideal for businesses that:
- Process recurring transactions in which the date or amount or both are different each month; for example, utility companies.
- Process usage charges that you bill only when the service is used; for example, pay-as-you-go cell phones.
- Are concerned with PCI compliance.
- Want to provide returning customers with the convenience of not having to re-enter personal data.
Creating a Customer Profile
- In the Customer Information Manager page, select +Add Profile
- A customer profile contains the following as minimum requirements.
- Customer ID (any value you choose)
- Description
- Optional - Payment Profile Information
- You will not be able to process payments against a profile until you have provided all of the payment method fields. You can, however, save an incomplete profile and edit it later).
- Optional - Shipping Profile Information
- Click OK to enter the customer profile, or Cancel to go back to the previous screen.
- When you click OK, the credit card or bank account information that you entered (if entered) is validated. If the payment information cannot be validated, the screen redisplays, with an error message in red at the bottom of the page.
- Note: Only a minimal verification is performed on the payment profile. To perform a complete verification of credit card data, check the box labeled "Perform credit card authorization before saving data"
- If the profile was accepted, the Customer Profile screen opens.
- Each customer profile you enter is automatically assigned a Customer Profile ID, along with a Payment Profile ID for each payment method, and if applicable, a Shipping Profile ID for any shipping addresses. If you have entered incomplete information, you can update the profile at any time.
Note: this process only allows you to create one Payment and one Shipping Profile. You can add more payment and shipping profiles at a later date by editing the profile and adding more.
To process subsequent transactions for that customer, you need only submit the Customer Profile ID in place of all customer information, including billing, payment and shipping information.
